Manges Memo - July 2019

Retirement ! Or is it?

On September 1 I will “retire” from EFCA ReachGlobal. Yes, that is in just a few days. But there is a reason I put “retire” in quotes. I am retiring, but I will continue to work for the Mission and continue to teach at CGST, the seminary in the Philippines, but I’ll do both on a non-paid volunteer basis.

Before I get into the details of that, I wish to say a very big T H A N K Y O U to you, our partners. Some of you have been with us from our acceptance as missionaries in 1984 or from our arrival in the Philippines in 1987 (see the photo – yes, I once was young and thin!). We are deeply thankful to God for your prayers, encouragement, and funding. May God bless each of you!

So what does this “retirement: look like? First, it means a shift in focus. By God’s grace I will center on teaching and say “no” to certain administrative and management duties. I plan to return each year to Cebu City, Philippines to teach at CGST. I plan to keep helping in the preparation of new missionaries for EFCA ReachGlobal. And I plan to help out with the EFCA and ReachGlobal as a consultant in the area of theology.

Second, it means I continue to be accountable to ReachGlobal leadership. I will be reporting regularly to my supervisor, Ken Warwick. And when in the Philippines I will be accountable to the seminary leadership there.

Third, finances. Because I remain accountable to ReachGlobal leadership I am allowed to maintain my account and raise funds for direct ministry expenses and travel. But I will no longer need to raise funds for salary or the Mission’s medical plan. I estimate my funding needs to be reduced by about 90%. The two largest expenses will be several trips to Minneapolis for missionary training and my annual teaching trip to CGST in the Philippines.

If you have any questions or comments about this, let me know. And, even though funding needs are reduced, we still need prayer!

  • Pray for wisdom to know when to say “yes,” and when to say “no” in this new phase of ministry.
  • Pray wisdom as Donna and I adjust to fixed income from pension and Social Security.
  • Pray for health and strength for our grandson, baby Logan, and his parents, Lauren and Shawn.

We thank God for your friendship and partnership with us.
